Unusual Marketing - Free Software

Written by Roman on November 28, 2007 – 10:41 am

Free SoftwareTechSmith has started the unusual promotion by giving away the previous versions of its software for free.

SnagIt - how to download and get the license key is described here. The free version is 7.2.5, and the current (not free) one is 8.2. This software allows you to capture screenshots of any objects on the screen. It’s really helpful while making help and manuals - we used to use pretty old version 5.

Camtasia Studio - download and registration instructions are here. The free version is 3, and the current not free version is 5. This software lets you make screencasting - for example, for video demo of your product.

It would be really interesting to know how this promotion will affect sales of TechSmith.

Do You Really Need a Partner?

Written by Roman on November 26, 2007 – 10:28 pm

Partnership in startupReading the post about partnership and co-founders I felt it would really make sense to put some comments on it based on our own experience of running software company.

The author, Dharmesh Shah, claims that getting right co-founder is one of the most important things for a successful startup. His point is that many startup companies have troubles with sales, marketing, technical implementation and so on, but many of those issues might be solved by having the right co-founders from day one.

You Need a Partner

In original post Shah claims that you need a partner to “spread the work and make better decisions”. I think it’s yes and no. You might run your own software company alone, and there are a lot of really successful companies with one founder. Later, when your product becomes larger and you need more people on board, you might probably hire somebody else. That’s true, it is easier to share the work with your partner, but I don’t think it is critical in certain cases.

Another story is if you develop some specialized software. Like in our case, developing Drug Database we need somebody with medical background. If you do not have enough money to hire somebody, you would need a partner.

One of You Can Build the Product

Basically, it is about not outsourcing your core business, which is pretty obvious. You might want to outsource your accounting, or ask another company to design and develop your home page, or buy some components or software from another company – but it sounds really stupid to ask somebody to develop your product instead of you.

One of You Can Sell

It’s very true. In our startup, one of us can build the product, and another one has domain knowledge. What we badly miss is a sales guy. But anyway, marketing and sales is not something that only wizards can do and even geeks can learn how to do it.

Know Your Partner Before You Start a Company

Well, it sounds logically. But reality might show some differences. I started my company with a few other guys whom I had known for pretty long time working in the same team for years. After 6 months, when we figured out that our product had a potential, but it would take us more time to be ready than we thought, they decided to quit. And my new partner, whom I had been known just for a few weeks ended up to be the dream partner – he puts a lot of efforts to move our company forward and he takes the same risks as myself paying for a lot of stuff from his own pocket.

Another thing that is still not clear for me is business with friends and relatives. In case of disagreement you might end up having failed company and failed friendship. My current partner had very bad experience when his brother-in-law managed my partner’s restaurant in US. Finally, money is gone, restaurant is closed, and my partner is not sure he wants to break up with his relative claiming his money back.

You Better Like Your Partner

It is also obvious. During the past year I think I’ve been talking to my partner more than to my wife. And I doubt you can spend so much time with somebody you don’t like. And without such patient wife too :-)

Answer All the Tough Questions

This is an advice to agree on the most important things between partners, like how much time each of your will spend working on your startup, what happens if one of you will quit and so on. You can find more on this in the article Questions You Should Ask Your Co-Founders. I guess this is the main reason why my cooperation with my ex-partners failed – we didn’t discuss all the details of our partnership, thinking only about company ownership, shares and other money related stuff.

Internet Opportunities in the Middle East

Written by Roman on November 21, 2007 – 6:37 pm

Internet Growth in the Middle EastAccording to the latest news, Google has recently opened its first office in Dubai. It’s nice to see the confirmation of your own thoughts from Google representatives. As Google’s official said, “It is just starting here, the awareness both of Google and the awareness of online. <…> You have early adopters who are really doing well and understand the opportunities, but the majority today are not online - from a marketing point of view - and in the case of many small businesses here, not online at all”.

Couple years ago when I just arrived to Dubai and was looking for the opportunities to start developing our own product, I was really surprised from not being able to find similar sites to what I used to use back at home. Those I had found had really terrible design. Just a few samples.

Buy or Sell a Car

Example one and example two. Nothing has been changes for the last two years.

Yellow Pages

This site looks more or less OK now. Couple years ago it was awful.

Real Estate Sites

Real Estate is booming now in UAE and it’s really strange that you will have pretty hard time trying to find any good site with the majority of offers on the market. Individual companies like this one has their own search, but that’s all. There is no one single web portal where you can go and search for the property and see all its pictures available.

Software Catalogs and Sales

Sites like Tucows are not presented at all.

Official Company Home Pages

Just a few examples of several organizations’ home pages:

Some of these web sites look like they’re done as a home work by somebody’s son or daughter who’s a first-year student in Computer Science College. From one hand it is really sad that companies that are doing well have such poor web sites, but from another hand it opens a good opportunity for those who will offer good design to all these companies in this region.

But design is just one thing. Another thing is that you are able to start a lot of different Internet projects in the Middle East right now because there are a lot of niches that are still not occupied. There are several points you would consider in this business:

1). It is important for Arabs to have a personal contact. They like to have a look at the product and touch it before they buy.

2). People here are afraid to pay by credit card over the Internet. Like myself eight or nine years ago.

3). You have to be patient enough before your project start earning some money. It will happen when normal people in this part of the World will start using Internet services on daily basis. So be patient and bring enough cash to survive until you start earning on your Internet project.
